COMI: Problems during banjo duel

Reported by: SF/hallmatthewj Owned by: fingolfin
Priority: normal Component: Engine: SCUMM
Version: Keywords:
Cc: Game: Monkey Island 3

Description

Having installed the latest english windows version 0.11.1 of Scumm VM I have also installed The Curse of Monkey Island (aka Monkey 3). I also installed it using the correct procedure of copying the appropriate files to my HDD and running the game from there.

I've managed to get the game working in what seemed to be perfect fashion but when you get to the task of defeating the Pirate in a banjo contest the following occurs in order:

1) The pirate completes his part of the first tune without any issues.

2) When Guybrush's turn comes to copy the sequence the whole process stops.

3) The pirate then responds verbally to Guybrush as though the task has failed (i.e. "whats the matter? can't keep up" and so forth)

This issue is inconsistent as sometimes it will allow me to hit the first note in the copying sequence, and occassionally I get to the second note - but it never gets any further than this.

I had thought that perhaps it was a processing speed issue and attempted to slow my computer down using the Task Manager to reduce it to one cpu however this has made no difference.

If anyone has an answer to this issue I would be massively grateful as otherwise the game seems to be running well and it would be an insult to my new laptop not to play it!

I am using an HP Pavillion 2.5Ghz laptop with 4GB RAM and English Windows Vista 32 bit operating system.

You have to start playing while the pirate is playing, not after.

See also <https://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1051049&group_id=37116&atid=418820> and <https://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1296826&group_id=37116&atid=418820>.

The only thing that I find a bit surprising is your "2) When Guybrush's turn comes to copy the sequence the whole process stops." -- could you elaborate what you mean with "the process stops" ?

What I mean is in the normal course of events the puzzle is solved by doing the following:

1) Pirate plays a melody followed by a sequence of single string notes - here it is the single string note that you need to remember and the sequence in which they were played (e.g. if strings were numbered 1-5 from top to bottom, a typical sequence might be string 2, string 3, string 4.

2) Guybrush repeats what the pirate has played back to him - wherein Guybrush automatically repeats the melody and then you have to select the correct single note until the sequence is complete (e.g. 2,3,4)

3) 1 and 2 are repeated I think three times with an increase in difficulty each time (ie number of notes to remember goes from 3-5 or something similar)

4) The pirate goes into an electric guitar solo at which point you shoot his banjo to gain his respect / complete task.

However on mine I get to the first point of repeating (i.e. 2 above), Guybrush automatically repeats the melody but I don't get the chance to select the single note - or if I do I only get to do so for the first two numbers in the sequence. What I mean by cutting out is that the task ends and the Pirate asks Guybrush whether he wants to have another go, but every time I go to do this it the task will suddenly stop whilst guybrush is automatically playing the melody part - which needless to say is infuriating.

I have completed this game before - and as such have never had a problem with this before so I am thinking it has something perhaps to do with playing it on this new laptop for the first time. All of my drivers seem to be up to date so I don't see an issue there, hence the being slightly flumoxed as to why it wont work.

Well, this sounds like the same problem as described under the two links I posted on my previous comment :).

The gist ist: You have to select the notes *while the pirate is still playing*, i.e. what you listed as steps 1 & 2 really should happen simultaneously. If you don't do that, you'll almost always be "too slow" and hence loose.
