INDY3: Timing problem with spigot and stein in brunwald

Reported by: SF/thunderpeel2001 Owned by: sev-
Priority: normal Component: Engine: SCUMM
Version: Keywords: script
Cc: Game: Indiana Jones 3

Description

Hi there, I've just decided to play through INDY3 again using ScummVM, but I'm having some serious problems! I have reached Castle Brunwald, and all seemed fine, except when I enter the Castle for the first time I am not met by the Butler. For some reason that particular script is not run.

That's odd, but not too bad. When I enter the Castle proper (ie. the overhead map), Indy is not shrunk down, so he appears gigantic.

Weird, but I can still play (the giant Indy just moves as slow as his "mini" counterpart until you enter a room). When you speak to the Drunken guard on the first floor, this all seems fine until you get his Stein. If you take the Stein to the Kitchen and use the Spigot on the Keg to fill it up, it all seems fine. If you then use the filled Stein on the Hot Coals (to put out the fire in order to get the Roast Boar), and then return to the Keg to refill the Stein, the Keg is now empty.

This makes it impossible to complete the game, and I know that if you leave the Spigot running long enough in a non-ScummVM game, that the Keg will run dry. But here it happens super-fast, preventing you from going further into the game.

Finally, and worst of all, once Giant Indy reaches a guard he must talk to or fight, the game completely hangs before the dialogue trees are displayed. ScummVM is still responsive, but the game itself crashes completely.

Very weird stuff!!

I'm playing INDY3 PC VGA (v 3.0.22) on the Win32 Daily Build. I've attached the save just before Indy enters Castle Brunwald for the first time.

I can reproduce this with the attached savegame, but not if I play the game myself from the beginning. Attaching my own savegame at Castle Brunwald. Perhaps someone can figure out what the difference between them is? File Added: indy3.s08

Yeah. When I created a saved game right outside Castle Brunwald (while Indy is talking with Elsa) I got the same bug. I posted my results with the Giant Henry Sr. Bug.

I'm still not able to reproduce the problem with my own savegames - I tried saving while Indy was talking - but in case someone else wants to try, I've attached an earlier savegame. File Added: indy3.s07

First of all, this is two bugs, not one, so it should be split in two

The first bug did not occur for me when I played the game, I simply turned the spigot on, filled the stein then immediately turned the spigot off each time

The giant Henry glitch has already been reported in #1463598: giant Henry Jones sr. The extra information in this bug report is that talking to a guard while Indy is a giant will crash the game

QUOTE: THEBLUEGR >> I simply turned the spigot on, filled the stein then immediately turned the spigot off each time

You USE STEIN WITH SPIGOT. Indy knows how to turn off and on a spigot without your help! ;)

It's also worth noting that the sound of the beer running out of the keg is missing.

NEW INFO: The guards do not chase INDY, I'm pretty sure that, if they spot you, they will come after you. In ScummVM they will ignore you unless you walk into them. Also, by doing what I just said, you can get Indy to grab the SERVANT'S UNIFORM and put it on before he reaches a guard. If he does this, then the game doesn't crash.

ALSO: If you pick a fight with the DRUNK GUARD as Indy, you can fight, but all Indy's animation is messed up.

TO eriktorbjorn: What version of INDY3 VGA are you running? (Run INDY3.EXE at the command prompt as "INDY3.EXE /?".) I wonder if it has something to do with that?

Mine claims to be 3.0.22, too.

Erik: Strange. I guess it's just random, then? One thing I didn't do, which I usually do, is bothering to go to Henry's House. That's something options which I know I didn't do in this game.

Also, the oddities continue: If Indy (dressed as the Servant) gets past the first two guards and makes his way to the stairs, instead of finding the second floor, he'll go straight into an encounter with (what looks like guard 1). If Indy beats this guard, he'll go straight into an encounter with what looks like Guard 2. Weird! (Not sure what happens next, never been good at the actual fighting!)

I never had any of the issues you described here

comment:10 by bluegr, 17 years ago

OK I've tried it again at this point

I didn't remember the stein and spigot bit, but I've played the game ages ago, whereas you played it just now

I don't have the PC VGA version of the game, but the FM-TOWNS version, which was released before the PC VGA version In the FM-TOWNS version, the Brunwald place runs without any problem, there's no indy size issue and the guards and the stein behave correctly. I was also met by the butler normally

Going to Henry's house does not affect the rest of the game, it's an isolated event unrelated to the rest

After trying Brunwald with both the FM-TOWNS and EGA versions of Indy 3, I didn't have any issues with Brunwald. Perhaps these issues appear only in the VGA version of the game? It seems that the script to resize Indy is not executed properly, which is where all the problems you're having begin from

comment:11 by SF/thunderpeel2001, 17 years ago

Well I've suggested a possible reason for the error: Not going to Henry's House. I've not had a chance to test this, but it might explain why some people have had this problem, while others haven't. It would be fantastic if someone could test this, but I will try and do it myself at some point.

I've always gone to Henry's house when I played indy3 in the past. So that is not the problem, as I already said. Going to Henry's house doesn't (and shouldn't) affect a scene in another place in the game in the way you're describing, and I've tried this in both Indy3 EGA and Indy3 FM-TOWNS

As I mentioned again, it is probably the VERSION of the game you're using, since Indy3 VGA was released much later than Indy3 EGA and Indy3 FM-TOWNS, which probably means they've changed some parts in the game's scripts in a different manner, which is not yet known to the ScummVM team. This explains why the glitches happen with some people and not others. Not all versions of each game are supported 100%. For example, Fate of Atlantis PC version works fine with ScummVM, but the FM-TOWNS version displays lots of animations as black boxes, because not many devs have that version and because it contains some unknown screen effects. Glitches also occur in the FM-TOWNS version of Monkey Island 1, but again the PC version works fine under ScummVM. It seems that things are reversed in the case of Indy3: the FM-TOWNS version works fine, whereas the PC version has glitches.

I don't get these glitches in the FM-TOWNS version, which is different to the one you got, and I can't test your save game because I get an "Unknown Euphony music event 0x36" event whenever I load it (because I got a different version of the game). All I can say right now is that one of the issues you're describing has already been reported in another bug report, whereas the other 2 (empty spigot and the odd guard behavior) are new. The odd guard behavior seems to be related to the giant Indy bug. Perhaps a script is supposed to change Indy's size and initialize the behavior of the guards and it's not started properly for some reason, but this is purely a speculation

????

I will get around to testing one day.

Please file separate bug reports for each issue. Stacking multiple issues in a single bug report makes it very difficult for us to track them. So, as the giant guard bug has already been reported, I will ignore that part here -- if you think you have relevant information on that issue, please add it as a comment to bug #XYZ.

The spigot/stein bug sounds like a timing issue, but it's odd that Torbjörn can't reproduce it with his savegame. John, could you please try whether you can reproduce the issue with Torbjörn's savegame?

The "guards don't chase you" issue should be reported as a separate new report; it'll be ignored otherwise.

Thanks!

I have tested it now with Torbjörn's savegames under "OXO" and they work fine, whereas my original save is still showing the same bugs I mentioned. I also replayed the game doing pretty much all I could remember that I did try and recreate the bug, but this time it was fine. Very strange :(
