I wasn't able to identify the exact cause of this, but I was able to commit in a workaround that effectively fixes the problem.

Typing in the Chat-O-Mat seems to generate the same kind of glitch. Notice how the "th" from things and the "c" from cheese are briefly erased in the attached video.

Finally tracked down and properly fixed the underlying cause with font drawing
