#841 closed defect (invalid)

voice versus subtitles

Reported by: SF/loupantai Owned by: Kirben
Priority: normal Component: Engine: AGOS
Version: Keywords:
Cc: Game: Simon the Sorcerer 1

Description

scummvm: 0_4_1 language: french version: simon1talkie platform: XP

I do have a french version of Simon1, I mean voice in english but french subtitles

At least, on my old pc running win95, this was its behavior

Now, with XP and the your great "scummvm", if I start the game without the "-q fr" option, the game executes with the (english) voice but
without the french subtitles

On the other hand, if I set the "-q fr", I do get the subtitles but the voice goes off

Scummvm do have an option "-n" to disable the subtitle maybe it could make sens to have a way to force them back

Regards, Jacques

No this isn't possible for the following reason: 1. The Simon code in ScummVM was based on English versions of Simon the Sorcerer 1 and 2, which didn't support combined speech and subtitles. 2. The English and German versions of Simon the Sorcerer 1 are missing most of the subtitles, although it would be easy to restrict it to other languages only. 3. The speech spoken and text in subtitles often don't match. 4. I have tried experimenting with Simon code in ScummVM but have been unable to get the speech and subtitles in sync at all times, without causing wait timeouts. 5. When I tried running an original Simon the Sorcerer 1 that supported combined speech and subtitles, the subtitles were often out of sync with the speech. So combined speech and subtitles in original games was just a hack which called both without worrying about keeping them in sync..

BTW the t key can be used to switch between the English voice and French subtitles when using -qfr command line option.

There is now support for combined speech and subtitles for the French, Hebrew, Italian and Spanish versions of Simon the Sorcerer 1 talkie in ScummVM cvs. The timing isn't perfect though, as some subtitles are shown for short amount of time. There was an error in my code when I responded earlier, this change actually solved an issue causing wait timeouts in these versions.
