#7663 closed feature request (wontfix)

Inclusion of scummvm-tools into gui & copying from CD

Description

It would be nice if the scummvm-tools were included in the gui, in that when you add a game to the gui it would ask you if you want to compress the games data files and what codec to use. This would also work great in conjunction with a way in the gui to insert the game disc and allow scummvm to scan the disc and copy the data-files needed to the hard-drive.

Pros: - This second suggestion would also cut down more on the use of ScummVM to play pirate copy's of games as the only games you would then not get ScummVM to copy the files from the disc would be the freeware games. - Less questions on what files are needed or how to copy files from Mac versions. - Less questions on how to compress data files.

Cons: - Quite a bit of work on the GUI and scripts. - ScummVM tools would have to be supported and so tested more.

Maybe one for Google Summer of code 2009?

More cons: - Very difficult to implement in a portable fashion - tons of new code would have to be added to ScummVM, tested, ported, etc. - In fact, will only work on Desktop machines, not on all ScummVM ports - Mac discs won't work on non-macs because extra tools would be needed to read the HFS formated files

All in all, i think a better time to spend anybody's time and other resources would be to work on the wxWidget based GUI frontend for the tools and make that truly user friendly and shiny. That has far more potential for a great user experience than adding this to ScummVm could ever have; e.g. stuff like drag&drop of files onto the GUI tools app is possible; such a thing would never be possible with ScummVM.

I agree with Max here completely, and thus, rejecting this request.

Currently tools package is supported only by small number of our ports, and even there we put a disclaimer that the tools are mostly unsupported. There is a reason for that as the tools do not undergo so thorough testing as the main program does. Our main goal is to support original media, compression is just a bonus.

And definitely we would better need someone to finish our GSoC'07 task for tools GUI.
