Description
What about adding support for MIDI hardware (e.g. MPU-401 interfaces, AWE/SBLive wavetable, ...) via OSS and ALSA?
This would have three advantages: - easier to set up than timidity (e.g. SuSE Linux 7.3 does not come with a suitable timidity version, since the server interface is not compiled in, and it lacks a complete GM patch set that works with timidity, since the supplied version does not accept configurations generated with sf2cfg)
- less CPU overhead (hardware mixing vs. software mixing)
- potentially higher quality, depending on the synthesizer used

I second this. Sam and Max is not the same without the wonderfully composed midi music
