#6868 new defect

LURE: Roland MT-32 music and sound

Reported by: Kirben Owned by:
Priority: normal Component: Engine: Lure
Keywords: Cc:
Game: Lure of the Temptress

Description

ScummVM 1.8.0git3030-gb39b154 (May 15 2015 13:22:11) on Windows 7 (SP1) Compiled with GCC 4.6.2 under MinGW

English VGA version of Lure of the Temptress

The music and sound effects for Roland MT-32 are dramatically different under ScummVM (with Munt sound driver), compared to using the original game under DOXBox (with Munt sound driver).

The main difference I notice is Munt reports using samples from memory under DOXBox, compared to only specific instruments been reported when Munt is been used under ScummVM.

A video of the start of the original game under DOXBox (with Munt sound driver) can be found on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CngUi4K2BPc which can be used for comparison.

To clarify, the game makes use of Roland CM-32L sound effects too.

Technically this should probably be a feature request rather than a bug report - it's not that Roland is broken, it's just that only Adlib sound was ever implemented.

If anyone's ever interested in implementing support, note that even though we got original sources from Revolution, it doesn't look like it includes source for the players, which were implemented as resources, rather than as part of the main game. You'd thus have to reverse the player from scratch, unfortunately.

I think in this case we should keep it as a bug. From a user point of view it's that he can select MT-32 output for Lure and Lure does not prevent that in any way (i.e. either fall back to something supported or at least have it documented that it doesn't work properly), thus the user will consider this more of a bug than an unimplemented feature.
