While examining the torch in the first scene ScummVM just hangs after the character stopped moving towards it, the music still plays on for a bit, but nothing happens apart of that.

I've had troubling trying to replicate any problem on my XP box - could you please try running the game with the flags:
--debuglevel=3 --debugflags=animations,scripts,hotspots

and capture the output? If you could upload a copy of it, it may give me a better idea of the exact point at which the error is occuring.

I attached the log, I waited some time before killing scummvm, so I hope everything important is in it.

Thanks for that; I was able to tell from the log that it was indeed just at the point where the look dialog should be displayed. I've added a new debug category called 'strings' to provide debug information of the decoding process - if you could run the game with debugflags of --debugflags=animations,scripts,hotspots,strings

Fixed with r29772. Attached log from that revision though.

I do not close this bug report for now since r29772 says at least it just added a special debug level and nothing about any other changes.

This was likely fixed by the resolution of bug 1842225, where the active hotspot Id was sometimes getting changed - hence the look dialog was trying to display an indexed string for another hotspot and ended up with a random string Id, hence the hang.

I'm going to close this bug now, since you haven't been able to repeat the problem with the new version.
