Description (last modified by LukasThyWalls)

Hello.

There is a Spanish fan translation of Return of the Phantom created by raulpuro, It works perfectly fine within DOSBox (You can open the installer EXE like a Zip, for example with 7-zip).

When you tried to add it to ScummVM (2026.3.1git31527-gd79f8bb292c (Sep 5 2026 04:07:59 / Windows 64 bits), it brigs the "Pick game" window with these two options:

  • Dragonsphere (CD/DOS/English) - Unknown variant
  • Once Upon a Forest (DOS/English) - Unknown variant

Either one or the other, It throws the unknown variant dialog:

The game in 'Phantom\' seems to be an unknown game variant.

Please report the following data to the ScummVM team at
https://bugs.scummvm.org/ along with the name of the game you tried to add and
its version, language, etc.:

Matched game IDs for the mads engine: dragonsphere-cd, forest

  {"section1.hag", 0, "76e2d47a7aebafe48edc9884b3d91782", 1130939},
  {"speech.idx", 0, "1522ade02e7969187eab1acfa78b367c", 634},

You can't force it (Putting the Spanish Fan Translation in a already English version added to ScummVM):

WARNING: Couldn't identify game 'phantom' for the engine 'mads'.!

Thanks!

Added the detection in, thanks. It should be available in the next daily build.

Hello.

Just tested it with ScummVM 2026.3.1git31673-g95f876af305 (Sep 12 2026 04:32:09) and I see something wrong.

I'm adding to ScummVM the English original version files from the GOG version, but ScummVM is detecting it as Return of the Phantom (CD/DOS/Spanish) and with and id phantom-cd-es.

If I add the one with the Spanish Fan Translation, It detects too as Return of the Phantom (CD/DOS/Spanish) and phantom-cd-es, which is correct.

Before this, It was detecting the English version correctly (and not detecting the Spanish one as I stated above).

I'm gonna tested again when the build-bot generates another build, as there is one commit related to Phantom which is newer, but looking the code I don't think It fix this.

Thanks.

I can confirm now, tested with ScummVM 2026.3.1git31684-g993529e20dc (Sep 13 2026 04:34:49), that ScummVM is detecting the original English version as the Spanish fan translation:

User picked target 'phantom-cd-es-1' (engine ID 'mads', game ID 'phantom')...
Running Return of the Phantom (Fanmade/DOS/Spanish)
section1.hag: 76e2d47a7aebafe48edc9884b3d91782, 1130939 bytes.
speech.idx: 1522ade02e7969187eab1acfa78b367c, 634 bytes.

The Spanish fan translation, is detected correctly and works:

User picked target 'phantom-cd-es' (engine ID 'mads', game ID 'phantom')...
Running Return of the Phantom (Fanmade/DOS/Spanish)
section1.hag: 76e2d47a7aebafe48edc9884b3d91782, 1130939 bytes.
speech.idx: 1522ade02e7969187eab1acfa78b367c, 634 bytes.

The reason I see here is because SECTION1.HAG and SPEECH.IDX are NOT part of the translation at all.

The translation EXE file I shared can be opened/extracted as a Zip (with 7-zip for example). All the files that are changed and added are these:

CONFIG.PHA
DIGITAL.AGA
GLOBAL.HAG
GLOBAL.IDX
INSTALL.EXE
Leeme_Traduccion.txt
MAINMENU.EXE
PHANTOM.BAT
README.TXT
RETURN.EXE
SECTION9.HAG
SECTION9.IDX
XSOUND.000

I suppose this is for all translations, but the main bulk of the translation is in GLOBAL.HAG (You can read there dialogs with a text editor) and SECTION9.HAG (there are lines of the intro) with the other files tweaked with minor details or because compatibility (I'm not the one who did the translation).

Other option could be NOT detect any translation, and don't any language in the name, as they seems to work in anyway they are detected.

Thanks!
