Description

This was brought to my attention by a recent youtube video on King's Quest III (King's Quest III - ADG Episode 345 by Pixelmusement)

Apparently some manuals from collection editions that contain KQ3 use different wording for some of the spell instructions.

On this unofficial website (sierraplanet) there's a short compilation of these cases. It seems that there are three (3) instances of errors, but it's unclear (to me) whether there's a manual that has all three of them. From what I am able to confirm, it's more likely these are errors found overall in manuals of collection editions that contain KQ3.

Below, the "original manual" version is taken from my GOG's version (2.14 1988-03-15 3.5"/DOS/English) English manual which appears to be image scans of an original manual pages (KQ3 for DOS). The "Collection Manual" version is taken from SierraPlanet's page linked above. From those errata, I am only personally able to confirm the one for the "Becoming Invisible" spell as being in the King's Quest Collection's manual from the version available on the Steam store. Also, this is the only error that Pixelmusement mentions in their video.

  • For "Becoming Invisible" spell, step 2:

Original Manual: Squeeze the cactus juice on spoon
Collection Manual: Measure a spoon of cactus juice
(the game responds with the error "What's a measure?")

  • For "Transforming Another into a Cat” spell, step 6:

Original Manual: Pat the dough into a cookie
Collection Manual: Mold dough into a cookie
(apparently the game accepts "shape" too, but does not recognize the word "mold")

  • For "Teleportation at Random" spell verses (last two lines):

Original Manual: Take me now from this place hither
To another place far thither
Collection Manual: Take me now from this place thither
To another place far hither
(the words "hither" and "thither" have switched places)

The sierraplanet author writes that these errors should be mentioned on a readme on the Collections' CDs but that may not be the case for some collections at least; Pixelmusement says there is a readme.txt on their CD but it makes no mention of this. And, after installing the Steam's King's Quest collection, there's no mention of manual corrections in the available readme.txt (for the Invisibility spell error).

I am submitting this as a feature request, left for the main engine maintainers for consideration.

Some extra info that has come up in the comments of the youtube video by user with handle @MikoKisai:

  • A King's Quest Collection edition uses the "mold" verb for or "Transforming Another into a Cat” spell, step 6. This collection "was a set of CDs containing 1-6 (possibly a European-specific release? CDs say they were pressed in 1994)".
  • Roberta William's Anthology (1996) (which also included KQ7), seems to have had all three mentioned misprints ("mold", "measure" and switched "hither" with "thither"). This edition however does include a readme.txt that points out the corrected versions of the phrases.
