AGI: KQ2: Dracula Never Appears in his Castle (Except in his Coffin)

Reported by: ArthurWalden Owned by: bluegr
Priority: normal Component: Engine: AGI
Version: Keywords: KQ2, Dracula
Cc: ArthurWalden Game: King's Quest 2

Description

I am using ScummVM version 2.8.1.

In King's Quest 2, I believe Count Dracula is supposed to appear at some point in his castle and attack before you open his coffin. At this point, you are supposed to use the silver cross to defend yourself (by showing to him or putting it on). However, he never appears anywhere until I open his coffin.

I am not saying that ScummVM caused this bug. I recall it long ago when I played the game in the 1980s. However, both Sierra's hint book and (I think) the recollections of my friend who long ago introduced me to the game indicate that Dracula is supposed to appear at some point in the castle, perhaps when you first enter.

I am playing the English GOG version of the game.

I am running the game on Windows 11 Home, version 23H2.

Dracula only appears in a single room in his castle. Graham can either kill him, or wake him up, in which case he rises and kills Graham.

Here is a relevant video, and a page containing all of the relevant story bits:

Thus, you never actually get to see Dracula in any other room, other than the room that contains his coffin. This is not a bug, it's the way the original game was designed.

First off, I also believe that the issue reported is invalid. But you can see Dracula elsewhere in the castle. There's just specific conditions to it and, as far as I can tell, it always requires first having visited his coffin room.

For what is worth, this topic was also brought up on the forums, by the Topic Starter here:
https://forums.scummvm.org/viewtopic.php?p=99625&hil

At the time I did some testing with the game in ScummVM and these were the findings (copied from my forum post):

What I can tell is that, at least in the current version of ScummVM, you have to first visit Dracula's coffin room to trigger the possibility of his appearing in the castle.

As far as I can tell, these possibilities exist (maybe more):

  1. You find the coffin open and leave. Then, if you go up to the first room of the castle, Dracula attacks (this does not seem to be random at all). You have to wear the cross to make him go away (transforms to bat). Otherwise he kills you. To make him re-appear you'll have to re-visit his coffin room, find it open, leave, and so on.
  1. You find the coffin closed, open it and wait a bit. Dracula wakes up and attacks. If you are wearing the cross, he flies away. If you don't he kills you. If you move close to the exit of the coffin room before he wakes up, you can leave the room, and he'll follow you to the next one with the stairs and attack there. I am unsure if you can dodge him being quick enough and have him chase after you more. If he flies away, and you leave and go up to the first room, you will again encounter Dracula, just like the aforementioned first case.
  1. If you find the coffin closed and leave and go up to the first room, Dracula won't appear there.

Finding the coffin open or closed seems to be random. You can trigger each case by walking out and back in to the coffin room.
