#14858 new defect

SCI: Phantasmagoria: ESC key (multi)clicks in final sequence

Reported by: darkshoxx Owned by:
Priority: normal Component: Engine: SCI
Version: Keywords: Undesired behaviour, Quality of Life
Cc: Game: Phantasmagoria 1

Description

Hi, another speedrunners issue, but it might just have a bit of QoL for regular players.
Phantasmagoria 1, English, GOG, Patch 1.1
ScummVM 2.8.0git7216....
Windows 11, 64 bit 23H2, build 22631.3007

In the final chase, starting from when Adrienne sits on her throne, pressing the "Esc" key both skips a cutscene and performs a mouse-click. It doesn't do that anywhere else in the game, not in Ch7 or other chapters.
It has happened to other players and scummvm versions as well (in fact, keeps happening constantly and kills our runs :) ).

Steps to reproduce:
Start new game, Chapter 7, go down the stairs, enter Dom's dark room, click the drain cleaner and the book. Then you're in the seat.
Click ESC to skip the cutscene. Try to interact with anything using either ESC or clicking, does the same.

Sometimes I *think* it clicks multiple times, leading to an immediate game over. I would assume that regular players too would at some point resort to skipping the final cutscenes they've seen over and over, and might encounter this behaviour as well. Is that something we could look into maybe?

I have returned with more information, that makes it easier to replicate and demonstrate the multi-click issue.

  1. Start game in chapter 7, bring up debug menu and go to room 46790 (The first time you might enter the theatre at a weird spot, in that case just get captured.) You will now be on the throne.
  2. Next, hover your cursor over the position shown in the image (i've put the status window there so the cursor doesn't disappear in game, but move to where the double-arrowed cursor would be in the game.)
  3. Now hit escape. It will both skip the cutscene and start the next one which you get by clicking in that area after the cutscene.
