#14315 closed feature request (fixed)

ULTIMA8: Request clipping view

Reported by: bliznik Owned by: OMGPizzaGuy
Priority: low Component: Engine: Ultima
Version: Keywords: clipping
Cc: Game: Ultima VIII: Pagan

Description

This is for ScummVM v. 2.7.0, with the time stamp of Feb 14, 2023.

In a previous version of ScummVM (I believe v. 2.2.0 or 2.1.0?), when you played Ultima 8, you could turn on cheating, hold down a key (I believe [Insert]), and you could look through walls to see if an item was hidden behind the wall. This was quite useful as there are plenty of incidents during the game where you could possibly lose an item forever if an explosion occurs, sending an item you want flying behind a barrier, like a wall.

This feature was removed in a subsequent version of ScummVM. I'm unsure when this occurred.

If possible, it would be nice if this feature could be turned back on.

I attach here a savegame in the castle, where you can easily place/throw items behind the wall to see them disappear forever.

Not really a bug or a defect, more of a feature request that I hope would be easy to add.

That feature is still there, but sorry I had to move the default mapping because Insert is used by Crusader: No Remorse for a roll action. I moved it to Alt-Insert by default - it's a little awkward but it's not a super common action so I thought it'd be ok.

You can also remap it from the ScummVM launcher to something else if you like, under Game Options -> Keymaps -> Ultima VIII Cheats, set "Toggle Clipping"

This might also be referring to the "Show Highlight Items" keybind, which makes items visible through walls by highlighting them. I recently moved this one from common keys to the debug keys that are not in the release builds, as it wasn't intended to be part of normal gameplay. We could consider making that a cheat option.

Moved "Highlight Items" back to common keybindings. Considering it is helpful to normal gameplay and only reveal hidden items that are already on map, there was no need to require cheats to access this.
Fixed in commit 7558a55 - Will be available in next release.
