I was able to trigger the following issue with the official nightly from the buildbot and with my custom Win32 builds.
Right after starting the German version of Supernova 1, you get the following error message regarding an assertion failure. The English version is *not* affected.

Yep, the assertion error happens as soon as I hit the "Start" button.
I just re-downloaded the game files from http://outpost.simplicity.de/ and I can still reproduce the issue, so I', tempted to rule out file corruptions (at least on my end, I can't verify if the game files are intact on the site itself).

When you say "right after starting", you mean at the point where it is supposed to show the newspaper article? For the English version it reads the image from the supernova.dat while for the German version it reads it from the original game files, so that might explain the different behaviour.
However I just tried starting the German version and for me I can see this newspaper article, the full intro, and then start playing. Is it possible that your game files may be corrupted?
