QFG4: Bonehead's dialog is fast forwarded when giving him a present

Reported by: lwcorp Owned by: sluicebox
Priority: normal Component: Engine: SCI
Version: Keywords: original
Cc: Game: Quest for Glory 4

Description

The bones shoot at you when you try passing into Baba Yaga, unless you give Bonehead something to please him. But once you give him such an object, there are 3 dialog screens that appear for about a second a time without any way to actually read them (there's no voice acting either).

Thank you for reporting this. I found this too, unfortunately it's a bug in the original game that we can't do anything about. These are broken messages with no audio, the same thing happened in DOS. There's quite a bit of that in this game. A while ago I fixed the few where the real audio was orphaned somewhere else but this audio simply doesn't exist.

The reason the messages are flying by is that when audio is enabled, the audio duration determines how long the message stays up. No audio means a very short delay. If you turn audio off and text on then the length of the text determines the delay and the text will display normally.

I'm closing this as wontfix as that's is what we've done for other missing audio bug reports for this game.

Ideally, we would have a workaround mechanism to handle this situation that results in text always being displayed and the text length used when dealing with missing messages, but I've spent a while trying to do that for this very game and after learning all the details I became convinced it couldn't be done, well within reason. I don't like that outcome though, so maybe this classic management technique of claiming something nerdy Can't Be Done will spur some genius.

digitall, thank you for tagging all these as SCI, I hadn't seen any of these QFG4 ones until now!
