Strangely enough, the volume goes down to reasonable levels when I change the music volume, and that's regardless of whether I change it to louder or softer. Once the music loops, the volume goes way back up again. The only explanation I can think of is that the MIDI driver and \_volumeTable\[\] disagree on the current channel volumes - and that \_volumeTable\[\] has the better value - but I haven't the foggiest idea why this would happen.
