#10714 new defect

GOB: Woodruff - Couldn't talk to the Beast

Reported by: khimeu Owned by:
Priority: normal Component: Engine: Gob
Version: Keywords:
Cc: Game: Woodruff

Description

On the very last screen it's not possible to talk to the Beast (which is supposed to possess Woodruff). Thus it's impossible to complete the game.

Note: very first releases of Woodruff exhibited the same bug - Sierra fixed it and shipped altered Woodruff.exe to customers which had first print.

Thus I strongly suspect that bug is actually in the game - but without some kind of workaround game is not completeable.

ScummVM 2.0.0 (Jan 1 1970 00:00:00)

I just played Woodruff with ScummVM 2.1.1 until this point and can unfortunately confirm that this bug is still present, preventing completion of the game.

Funnily enough, my sister played Woodruff with the same data file as me, but with the game set to English (GB) (whereas I played with the game set to German), and she didn't encounter this bug. So this bug doesn't seem to affect all situations.

I tried to create a new Woodruff game also set to English (GB) and copied my German savegame to woodruff-gb.sXX to see if this might fix it, but while the savegame seemed to load fine (didn't attempt to visit any other locations than the bigwig's home), this did not resolve the issue. So maybe this is caused by something earlier in the game, depending on the locale...?

in the latest master of ScummVM rename woodruff-gb.s01 to woodruff-win-gb.s01 so ScummVM is able to detect it.

Unfortunately in the latest master of ScummVM, its still not possible to talk to the Beast.

Would be good to resolve this for the 2.9.0 release.

Seems to be solved. Just completed the game in 2.9.1.

As a previous poster completed the game (in another language) even while the bug was reported, it's not certain it's fixed, you need to either pinpoint the original bug or have a whole lot of more people playing it to the end to be sure, and posting it here.

Can't prove a negative and all that.

What you can I suppose, is try to load up the savegame posted here and see if the bug still exists in the savegame. That would still only prove the bug exists in the savegame (it often happens savegames record bugs) but it would be a bit more information(or not).

Another way would be comparing\reversing the different exes released by sierra that supposedly fixed this bug and see what's the bug fix there and if it would make sense that scummvm was affected.

I loaded up khimeu's savegame and the bug was indeed present.
However, I noticed that he has the VIBLEFROTZER still in the inventory, even though it's been used on Bigwig already. This should not be possible and might be related to the bug.

In any case, my game can be completed without issues. I've attached the save.
