When loading a save game, for example, the Sand Skimmer stage, the skimmer's sound does not play. However, once hitting a rock and playing the sound, the background sound returns. This is also noticeable during other areas with background effects. They play during the course of the game without an issue until loading a save game.

I wasn't able to replicate this on my arch linux system. Sound effects seem to play just fine after loading.
