SCI: KQ7: No background music v1.4 Linux

Reported by: dafioram Owned by: dafioram
Priority: normal Component: Engine: SCI
Keywords: sci32 Cc:
Game: King's Quest 7

Description

When I play KQ7 1.4 on Ubuntu 17.04 or RetroArch (Retropie 4.2) there is no background music playing while I walk around after the start of chapter 5.

Note if I play on windows it works just fine, if play version 2.0b it works on all platforms just fine.

The game still plays audio when there is no background music, so you can hear the ego talking and sound effects.

I chose the default sound options.

Once I setup some midi emulation everything worked great. I used Qsynth (alsa) and scummvm picked it up automatically.

For future reference, the issue here was that the 1.x versions of KQ7 only support General MIDI, and the host system had a default GM device configured that was not actually capable of playing back MIDI. Switching to the built-in FluidSynth software MIDI, or installing another General MIDI device that actually works, is all that is needed to resolve the problem.
